The City of Hendersonville’s Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) partnered with a professional preservation planning consultant and Blue Ridge Community College Archives to launch the Neighborhood History Project in 2025 and is ongoing.
The project's aim is to preserve the personal stories, photographs, and historical documents that reflect the cultural heritage of Hendersonville communities with a special focus on the neighborhoods of West End, Peacock Town, Harris Street, Black Bottom, and Brooklyn.
Over several months, two parts of the project progressed simultaneously. Sybil Argintar, Preservation Planning Consultant, worked with community members and existing historical records to create a report covering the history of the different neighborhoods within Hendersonville and exploring their cultural significance. Rachel Quinn, Instruction and Archives Librarian at Blue Ridge Community College, conducted several oral history interviews with the help of Eric Gash to help preserve community members' stories of growing up and living in Hendersonville before and after integration.
The project would like to say a special thank you to Katy Gash. We would not have been able to conduct so many oral histories without her help. Her passion and committment to preserving the community's histories is inspiring.
