Biographical History

Built in 1929 where the home of Dr. W. Hicks Justus formerly stood in downtown Hendersonville, Hotel Skyland was both a commercial and tourist destination. A group of local businessmen wanted to increase the number of hotel accommodations in the area as the city was a favorite location for families seeking cooler temperatures in the summer. The focus of the hotel was to provide luxury without excessive cost to guests. Construction was done by the J.A. Jones Construction Company, based in Charlotte, for the Mountain Hotel Corporation, and it was leased by the Southeastern Hotels Company. It consisted of six floors of fire resistant brick and 80 rooms with their own baths. The main floor was made up of the lobby, a ballroom, a coffee shop, the main kitchen, the short-order kitchen, and several business spaces. The second floor had a sun parlor along with 10 rooms. The rest of the floors were all bedrooms. There was a roof garden as well. The name Skyland was submitted by Mrs. John A. Allo from Fort Lauderdale, Florida in a naming contest hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. The hotel struggled financially throughout the 1930s due to the Great Depression. Despite this, it was a popular location with tourists and as an event locale for community members. Several famous people have stayed at Hotel Skyland, including Lee Marvin, Minnie Pearl, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Ronald and Nancy Reagan. It was eventually converted into condominiums during the 1970s.
