The Children of the Happy Land
Approximately twenty-five children were raised at the Kingdom of the Happy Land.
Many had traveled with their parents from Cross Anchor, while others were born in North Carolina during the community’s most active years as part of the rural landscape of Henderson County. As these children grew into adulthood, the social and economic landscape of post-emancipation America was shifting.
New opportunities and motivations emerged, encouraging the next generation to build their lives beyond the protection that rural isolation had offered their parents.
