Ezel Couch

Ezel Couch was just a baby when his family left South Carolina in 1873.

In 1957, when he and his sister Mary were in their eighties, they were interviewed by Sadie Smathers Patton for her booklet on the Kingdom of the Happy Land. According to Patton, the Couch family came from Union, South Carolina, about 16 miles west of Cross Anchor.

In Sadie Smathers Patton’s booklet, Ezel and Mary Couch recalled moving to Hendersonville with their parents and brother Anderson after “the Kingdom broke up.” Although records of the family from that time are scarce, many documents trace Ezel’s later life.

In 1924, at the age of 50, Ezel Couch got married to 42-year-old Ella Moore in Hendersonville.

The next census, in 1930, showed Ezel and Ella living with their 20-year-old son, Thomas.

By 1950, Ella had died, and Ezel was still living with Thomas.

Ezel Couch died in 1961 of bronchopneumonia.
